Just as we now understand more about the impact our carbon footprints are having on the earth and the devastating damage that results, we now have increasingly more information on the grave repercussions of water overuse and global imbalance of supply. In the past 50 years, the world's overall water use has tripled, while most families in rural Kenya survive on only a fraction of the average.
The United States' water consumption is twice the global average.
And we are not only destroying ourselves and neglecting our neighbors. Since 1970, the population of freshwater species has been halved; one-fifth of all freshwater fish vanished in the past century—an extinction rate nearly 50 times that of mammals. Polluted water sickens nearly 3.5 million Americans and over one billion Africans each year.
The largest and most looming threat in our country is depletion of resources… and possibly much sooner that most will realize. And, ironically, while we waste and neglect to conserve this precious resource, our 
neighbors around the globe are lucky to find a gallon of water per day… water that is usually not even sanitary. But many of us are trying to correct this wrong, or are at least doing what we can to “offset” the damage we have done or do every day. Even Coca Cola and Levi Strausse have opted to transition their companies to “water neutral” corporations by reducing their manufacturing consumption and offsetting their overage through water conservation programs.
Consumers are significantly more attracted to companies that are making efforts to conserve.
Check out how much water is used in producing simple daily consumer goods (chart to the left)… It’s shocking to add all of these up, based on our day to day needs, purchases and luxuries.

Well Aware is now providing businesses and individuals the opportunity the donate Virtual Water Offsets to our life-saving water projects in Kenya.
An individual can virtually offset their water consumption for a month for only $14.00!
The math can bet a little tedious (that’s why we have some awesome nerds here to calculate it for you), but the idea is as simple as this: Your donations will “offset” your water overage for a year or more, depending on which offset option you choose.
You will receive a certificate detailing your contributions, as well as a sticker that you can sport on your auto or tote. You will also be sent html code for a “button” on your personal or business website or blog announcing your contribution and water offset action.
Please note:
Well Aware’s Water Footprint calculator and Water Offset Initiative is technically deemed a “virtual offset”, as defined by the Water Footprint Network, meaning that the beneficiary of your donation is located in a different area than the one in which you reside, and/or the water initiative will “offset” an area of water conservation concern that varies from the water conservation concern in your Water Footprint calculation.
We in no way encourage you to stop conserving water. Please continue to do what you can to reduce your water use!
